Why Read this Book?

George Mumford shares his story of his past, and how he turned some of the best athletes in the NBA at the top of their game such as: Kobe Bryant, Michael Jordan, and Lamar Odom. Some pretty big names! He has proven, gentle but groundbreaking mindfulness techniques can transform the performance of anyone with a goal, be they an Olympian, weekend warrior, executive, hacker, or artist.

The reason I chose this read is because it is written in a personal narrative. George Mumford was a basketball player at the University of Maryland, but had a career ending injury. After battling addiction to heroin from the emptiness he felt after getting hurt, he then turned his life around. It truly is an inspiring story!

What to Expect to Learn

The charismatic teaching style that combines techniques of engaged mindfulness with lessons from popular culture icons such as Yoda, Indiana Jones, and Bruce Lee, Mumford tells illuminating stories about his larger than life clients. His writing is down-to-earth and easy to understand and apply. The Mindful Athlete is an inspiring story and an invaluable resource for anyone looking to elevate their game, no matter what the pursuit!

“Self-consciousness is when you’re focused on how you’re doing instead of what you’re doing. We have to learn how to push and challenge ourselves, but not in an insensitive way. Honing your performance really comes down to being comfortable with being uncomfortable.”—George Mumford

My Thoughts

Physical training is highly important when it comes to athletic performance, but not as an important as mental training. It took me awhile to figure that out though. I was making great gains in the weight room, and my ability on the field was constantly increasing. The actual performance though was never good enough. I was falling short every time and I couldn’t for the life of me figure out why, especially with all the success I’ve had with physical training. I started reading up on why this was happening. All sources came to a lack of mental focus. I was too worried about my next training session that I forgot about why I was training in the first place. FOR SUCCESS ON THE FIELD! I started applying tips and tricks that I have learned and boom; I am finally competing at a level that I am more than satisfied with!
